Lipidprofiles is a non-profit multicenter initiative spearheaded at the National University of Singapore which aims at providing novel insights into the function of membrane lipids that are involved in cellular processes underlying physiology and disease. It is well known that biological membranes are composed of a bewildering variety of different lipid species but it is not clear why Nature has created so many different forms. We use analytical techniques to measure lipids derived from tissue and cell extracts under different physiological conditions and genetic backgrounds. A special focus lies on signaling lipids which are actively metabolized in response to cellular stimulation. Systems level scale profiling of lipids, ‘lipidomics’, is a novel and independent approach to the global analysis of biological systems thereby providing an additional layer of information to qualitative and quantitative genomic and proteomic data.
